Discovering York’s Diverse Venue Landscape

Exploring York’s Leading Event Venues

Our Events Executive, Jacqui Martins, travelled to York to visit several venues we regularly recommend to clients. The trip provided a valuable opportunity to experience these spaces first-hand, gaining a deeper understanding of their meeting facilities, accommodations, and unique features.

Over the course of the visit, Jacqui visited four very different venues. The Milner York, Hilton York, Malmaison York, and Hotel Du Vin York. Each property offers something distinct, from grand historic architecture and boutique charm to contemporary event spaces and rooftop dining. Together, the venues demonstrated the variety of options available for meetings, events and group accommodation within the city.

The Milner York

Located directly beside York Railway Station, The Milner immediately impressed with its striking Victorian architecture and grand interior spaces. Originally opened in 1878, the hotel combines period elegance with modern facilities, creating a memorable arrival experience with its sweeping staircase, high ceilings and expansive public areas.

What stood out most was the contrast between the exterior and interior. While the building’s façade is understated, stepping inside reveals a truly impressive venue. The dedicated Events Centre, situated adjacent to the hotel, provides a flexible standalone event space with its own entrance and facilities, making it particularly suitable for larger gatherings.

With 155 bedrooms and suites, ten meeting rooms, an outdoor terrace, swimming pool, gym, sauna and steam room, The Milner offers an excellent option for residential conferences, corporate events and incentive groups.

Hilton York

Situated within York’s historic city walls and directly opposite Clifford’s Tower, Hilton York benefits from one of the city’s most desirable locations. Recent refurbishment works have transformed much of the property, creating a fresh and contemporary feel throughout the public spaces, meeting rooms and guest accommodation.

One of the most interesting features was the newly created Rose within the Walls event space, a converted former pub that offers a completely different atmosphere from the main hotel. Available for exclusive hire, it provides a unique setting for a variety of events and private functions.

The refurbishment theme inspired by York’s famous Terry’s Chocolate Orange adds a subtle local touch, particularly within the bedrooms where design elements reference the iconic confectionery. With eight meeting spaces, 131 bedrooms and a gym on site, the hotel offers flexibility for both corporate and social events.

Malmaison York

Malmaison York delivers a vibrant and contemporary experience in a central city location. The property feels bright, open and energetic from the moment you arrive, with stylish interiors and numerous breakout areas designed for both work and relaxation.

The meeting facilities are particularly impressive, with three event spaces accommodating up to 180 guests alongside six dedicated meeting pods within the business centre. These smaller spaces provide excellent options for private discussions, one-to-one meetings and breakout sessions.

A highlight of the visit was Sora Sky Bar, York’s only rooftop terrace venue. Offering private dining for up to 40 guests alongside outdoor seating for 73, it provides spectacular views across the city and creates a memorable setting for networking events and receptions.

With 150 bedrooms and suites, a spa, gym and a range of dining options, Malmaison is particularly well suited to clients seeking a modern, lifestyle-focused venue.

Hotel du Vin York

For those looking for a more intimate and boutique experience, Hotel du Vin York offers something entirely different. Housed within a Grade II listed mansion just outside the city walls, the property retains much of its historic character while delivering the personalised service associated with the Hotel du Vin brand.

The hotel’s history as both a private residence and former orphanage has resulted in a fascinating layout, with numerous quiet corners, lounges and hidden spaces creating a relaxed atmosphere throughout. It feels less like a traditional hotel and more like a welcoming country house within the city.

The property offers 44 individually designed bedrooms and suites, four meeting rooms accommodating between 12 and 22 delegates, and a courtyard suitable for events of up to 50 guests. Its renowned wine cellar, featuring up to 400 wines, provides an additional point of difference for private dining experiences and social gatherings.

Useful Insights

One of the strongest takeaways from the trip was the diversity of venue options available across York. Despite being a compact city, York offers an impressive range of spaces suited to a variety of event types and sizes. Whether clients are planning a conference, meeting, private dining event, or team-building experience, there is a venue to match their requirements.

What makes York particularly appealing is its blend of historic character and modern facilities. Many venues combine distinctive architecture and heritage features with the technology, flexibility, and comfort expected by today’s event organisers.

Each venue visited offered its own unique personality and strengths, from elegant period properties and boutique hotels to contemporary event spaces and rooftop settings. This variety makes York a highly attractive destination for meetings and events, offering clients plenty of choice while providing delegates with a memorable experience.
