What is Martyn’s Law?
Martyn’s Law, officially known as the Protect Duty, is new legislation being introduced in the UK to improve security at public venues and events. Named in memory of Martyn Hett, one of the 22 people tragically killed in the Manchester Arena terrorist attack in 2017, this law is the result of tireless campaigning by Martyn’s mother, Figen Murray OBE. Her mission has been clear: to ensure that no other family has to suffer such devastating loss due to preventable lapses in security. The legislation builds upon the Protect and Prepare strands of the Government’s wider counter terrorism strategy, CONTEST.
Martyn’s Law seeks to make venues, event organisers, and operators more accountable for the safety of those attending their spaces. It requires thorough risk assessments, proportionate security measures, and robust preparation to respond effectively to potential threats. In short, it ensures that security is never an afterthought, but a key part of the planning process, as it should be.
